Sephora Just Gave a Small Mexican Beauty Brand Its Biggest Stage Yet

By Aora México

AORA México launched as the retailer's first fully plastic-free beauty brand. New York, one of the beauty industry's biggest markets, gets a front-row seat.

A spicy lip serum called Acaríciame Más sold out three times before it ever reached a Sephora shelf. No campaign engineered it. Shoppers found it, tested it, and told everyone they knew.

The brand behind it, AORA México, just became Sephora's first fully plastic-free beauty label. It ships every product in tin, aluminum, or wood instead of the usual plastic packaging. The launch arrives during Plastic Free July. It puts a brand with years of online buzz in front of New York shoppers. The retailer ranks among the biggest in the beauty world.

Ahora or Never

AORA takes its name from ahora, Spanish for now. Nour Tayara and Rodrigo Peñafiel built the brand in Mexico City in 2022. Their bet was simple: luxury beauty and environmental responsibility could share the same shelf. Formulas lean on Mexican-origin ingredients, including five native chiles, tepezcohuite, and cactus flower.

The Inícia Illuminating Primer sold out three times before its retail debut. It built a following among makeup artists well before most shoppers could buy it. The lineup also includes the pyramid-shaped Mírame eyeshadow palette and a set of collectible leather Chile Carrier Charms. Prices run from $22 to $65.

Zero Plastic, Zero Apologies

rePurpose Global certified the brand's plastic-free packaging. AORA says its customers have already helped remove more than 2,390 kilograms of plastic from nature through their purchases. Sephora's flagship stores usually gleam with acrylic compacts and cellophane wrap. A full collection without either one is rare enough to stop shoppers mid-aisle.

Spanish-language packaging and bilingual content are still uncommon at major beauty retailers. AORA commits to every bit of it. New York City carries one of the largest Latino populations of any U.S. city, with deep Mexican, Dominican, and Puerto Rican communities woven through its five boroughs. A brand built on Mexican ingredients and language lands in a market already fluent in the culture behind it.

The collection is live now at Sephora.com only. No in-store date has been confirmed. AORA already built a zero-plastic, all-aluminum display for retail partners. Shoppers near Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Long Island may want to watch their local Sephora as the rollout takes shape.

"This is the moment we built AORA for," said Nour Tayara, AORA's co-founder, in a statement marking the Sephora launch. "Sephora sets the standard in beauty, and when it embraces a new idea, the industry pays attention. This launch proves that plastic-free luxury is no longer a niche concept. It belongs at the center of the beauty industry, and we're proud to show that a brand born in Mexico can help define what's next."

A brand named after the word now chose a fitting moment to prove it.
